Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game comes Ruth Ware’s highly anticipated fourth novel.

On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.

Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Describing a person and their emotions a couple times ok, but every other chapter, over and over is boring. Five stars, no way.

Had heard glowing review on NPR. Have never read this author before and sounded good. But it wasn't. Repetitive writing, boring characters, expected story. No twists, turns or surprises. Disappointed. Will delete samples of other books by this author.

Frankly I’m puzzled by all the 5 star reviews, and I’m annoyed that I was swayed by them into purchasing this book. The writing is tedious, the character development is flimsy and pointless, and the “chilling mystery” is predictable. Don’t waste your time or money on this lightweight garbage. If you are looking for some real gothic thrills written by someone with actual literary talent, go read the Little Stranger by Sarah Waters.

I am a huge fan of this author, and this book did not disappoint. The characters are so well developed and the plot twists are fantastic! Can’t wait for more from her!

This book never quite materializes as to what it would like to be. I was disappointed.

This book... where to begin?!! First off, Ware’s writing never ceases to amaze me. It evokes a true longing to read and read because the stories are so real and so complicated. Every time I thought I had guessed the ending of this book (multiple times I was willing Harriet to know what I did), I was wrong! It’s almost as if Ware knew where your mind would be taking you and she then whipped the story around and threw you off the scent. The story within the wonderful writing of “The Death of Mrs. Westaway” is both heart-wrenching and uplifting. You can’t help but feel overwhelmed by how real and raw the characters’ emotions are. It’s almost as if you’re a part of the story - in the room with them even! I won’t share more about the story for fear of writing spoilers. For any fans of Ware’s other books, prepare yourself. This is the best yet! For those who don’t know Ware, please do yourself a favor and read this book!! Then, go read all her other ones.

It was just ok. She has the tendency to write the same things over and over again. Character and scene description redundancy was a bit tiring. Unsatisfying ending. Blah.
